A Whale in the Sky

A Whale in the Sky

‘Tis a quaint old tale,

Of the time when a Whale thought it woke up to an ordinary day,
It felt at home to be surrounded by the blues it knew.
After all, it was supposed to be quite an ordinary day.
The place seemed unusually quiet,
No clatter from crabs, clicks from turtles, or pops from fish,
No bubbles floating around or beds of colorful corals at all!

The Whale was rather distraught with the disappearance of everything it thought familiar.
"Why is nothing out of the ordinary even though it is?" murmured the Whale.
Its expectant eyes flew up questioningly, towards the dancing sunbeams on the surface,
Only to be met by the sights of white, fluffy, floating structures.
"Oh! How wonderful these things seem", thought the Whale, "So puffy and large, I wonder what they could be?"

Alas! It had no clue it had landed into a World above its own,
Into a realm where it didn't belong,
Home to clouds and feathered friends unknown.
Only when the Whale took a glance below did the blues seem familiar no more!
Haphazard structures of fascinating heights and landscapes with trees and shrubs so tiny,
The Whale hadn't realized its acquaintance with new elements of the Earth.
With heavy breezes and whiffs of the strangest scents, calls from the passing birds, and warmth of the Sun,
It was astonished by the thought of another world away and above its own,

Where it didn't need water to float around.

But the excitement died down soon,
When the Whale remembered its beloved sea.
Of all the times when it was swimming and squealing with joy.

Oh! the melody of rain hitting the waves,

Or the beauty of light penetrating through the waves!
The new world was inviting but it wasn't home, you see,
And the Whale felt completely out of place.

A contrast of emotions came upon,
As the skies turned grey.
And as the fleeting clouds lost their charm,
The calls of the songbird were lost to the air.

Gusts of wind gave away their sense of comfort and control.
And as the surroundings felt bizarre and out of place,
The Whale wished to be away from the unknown,
To be a Whale in the sea once more.

An illustration of the Whale by me! :)

  1. wow nice. Perhaps one should think out of the box to write such a poem. Both the illustration and the poem are excellent. So perfectly matched.
